The remote region of Pangi in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh is a remarkably beautiful valley situated along the banks of the Chandra Bhaga River, which is the main river of Himachal. This valley is nestled between the Peer Panjal mountain range of the Himalayas and the Zanskar mountain range. It is an extremely picturesque place.
In this area, the community of Pangwal people is living their lives in tranquility and prosperity.
There are three main routes to reach this region, the first one Sach Pass, starting from Chamba, which remains open for only four to five months from June to October officially due to its higher elevation.
This route is filled with thrilling and beautiful scenes. The distance between Chamba and the main headquarters of Pangi Valley on this route is 180 km. This route remains closed during the winter season. To reach this route, one must first reach Chamba, from where the journey proceeds towards Tissa Beragarh, leading to Sach Pass and then to headquarter of Pangi Killar. Currently, the road is paved up to Beragarh, beyond which it becomes a rough path, and it is advisable to travel further with 4x4 vehicles. A good grip on driving is essential for traveling on this route. One can reach here by personal vehicle or through shared taxis. During the summer, HRTC buses also operate on this route until October 15th.Before traveling on this route, make sure to thoroughly check your vehicle and carry essential supplies such as food, water, and warm clothing, tools. Beyond Bairagarh, there are no residential areas for about 30-40 km, and there is also no petrol pump, so be well-prepared for your journey.
Another route known as Padri jot, starting from Chamba and passing through Bhandal, Kihar, Langera, Padri Pass, Bhadrawah, Doda, Kishtwar, and Gulabgarh, leads to Pangi. This route also closes during the winter but remains open for a longer duration compared to Sach Pass, and most of it is paved, providing a relatively comfortable journey. Personally, I find this route to be the best.
Another route from Chamba to Pangi goes through the Atal Tunnel from Manali, passing through Lahaul's Tandi and Udaipur alongside the Chandra Bhaga river. This route is also over 600 km long. It tends to close during heavy snowfall in winters, but the Border Road Organization diligently maintains this road.
